NY Fashion Week: Sabyasachi

So you all know that while Fashion Week is on in India, there's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week happening in New York, right at the same time! And today Sabyasachi was showing! Oh, I was so excited, thats one designer I was absolutely looking forward to seeing, so imagine my surprise when I acually saw the collection!

I am devastated. It was just so lacking in its appeal, that barring a few pieces, I pretty much wrote off the entire show!

All trademark Sabyasachi traits were missing and that might have been a good thing if he was trying to move away from the 'cliché' and 'stereotype' but instead, he failed to deliver and so was left floundering neither here nor there! I know am being harsh, but from a designer with his calibre, expectations always ride high and to be left so low and dry is just plain disappointing!

Not all was bad. Some pieces were good, like the long printed coat in vibrant red with wide collar or the olive a-line coat! Some of those flowy long printed skirts worked too!

But all in all, I kept waiting for the collection to get better. And was left wondering, is this it? This can't be it! Is it?

Day 3: Risa By Abhijeet Khanna

Risa by Abhijeet Khanna, a collection, which was dominated by rich technicolor palette and a play on the flower motifs as well as jazzing up the classic argyle patterns! Some individual pieces worked really well, like, day dresses in deep reds, a dress in olive with metallic sheen to it, a simple dress with little floral detailing and short cropped jackets!

As for the others, not as much. The collection overall wasn't just as impressive as other contendors had been. It seemed as if the designer got a little carried away with the whole 'theme' in its entirety, instead of interpretting it!

Am I being too tough? I think not.

Day 3: Rabani And Rakha

The collection put forth by Rabani and Rakha was exquisite and quite timeless. The color palette stayed dominated by creams, whites and beiges though they did have a sequence in black and another one with more metallic mauve'ish hues. My favorite in this collection had to be the saris. The intricate and often elaborate detailing and craftsmanship on those saris just pops at you. And the best part is, they are quite timeless in their appeal, so you know, when you buy something like this, its going to be around for a long, long time! Forget the saris, they even managed to pull of some long evening gowns with just the right amount of work, to give it, its healthy dose of chic! And that doesn't happen everyday!

Day 3: Prashant Verma

What happens when you throw pop-culture, drama, old-world-glam, new-world-modernism, and attitude into one melting pot? You get Prashant Verma's collection, but of course!

The collection seemed fit for a starlet or a woman who walks into a room to own it! It had 'Diva' written all over it! The designs were bold, in your face and for no wallflower! It was innovative and kitschy at its best! I loved his play on classic lines of evening-wear!

I might not necessarily rush out to buy his clothes, but am sure as hell going to be enjoying them!

Day 3: Gauri Bajoria

Gauri Bajoria's collection titled Hiji Biji (Bengali phrase for ' haphazard') was absolutely delightful. The collection was marked by colors that were all matte, muted, understated and almost candied variations of the original colors! The collection had a little bit of everything and radiated easy sophistication for daytime glam!

My favorites had to be the blue, green dress and the grey sari with the checkered border!

Nice.

Day 3: Elisha W

The collection by Elisha W was called Viva De Glam and while glam it was, it missed the year by a bit! A bit being decades,it seemed more like a blast from the sixties! See, thats the thing with doing evening wear, its so easy to get carried away with yards of fabric and shimmer that it just ends up looking like 'Barbie goes to prom' way back when!

Though not the entire collection could be written off, when Elisha W was restrained, she came up with the best designs. How delectable is that dress in pink and cream with detailing on the neck or even that dress in mauve with pleating and chord detail? Most of the short dresses worked. Even the saris looked good! As for everything else...

If Elisha W learns to edit herself a little more, she definitely has potential. As for me, am just a bit blinded for now!
